Smokey Robinson Gives Out Gasms After Gasms

Running low on, uh, gasms? Smokey Robinson’s gotcha covered. On Friday, the 83-year-old soul icon released his new album Gasms, which opens with a repetitive track of the same name. While Justin Bieber famously sang the words yum and yummy a total of 55 times on “Yummy,” Robinson has even the Biebs beat. By our count, we hear gasm — including variations like gasms, eyegasms, eargasms, and even mindgasms — no fewer than 64 times.

Solange Is on Her Way to the Ballet

Solange is on her way to the show. Dance is in the Knowles genes. Look at Beyoncé paying tribute to disco and house music in all their wonderful permutations on her recent album Renaissance. Or her sister, Solange, who’s taking things in a different direction and composing a score for the New York City Ballet. The NYCB announced the commission in a press release August 15, adding that Solange’s piece was composed for chamber ensemble and will be choreographed by Gianna Reisen, who in 2017 became the youngest choreographer to work with the NYCB.

Taylor Swifts Freaky folklore Movie Mood Board

Taylor Swift loves to beat an aesthetic into the proverbial ground, and never has that been more clear than in the marketing materials for folklore, her very first haunted album about knitwear and crying at trees. Taylor really went for it in the album’s accompanying merchandise and stills and first music video, which depict her doing all manner of ghostly woods activities, including but not limited to: sitting in a gigantic wheat field by herself, wearing the Babadook’s coat, doing her hair like an old-timeydoll, getting lost alone in a forest, frantically running away from somebody with a camera, standing precariously on rocks, and drowning.

Arnett is an expert at capturing longing and sadness and passion — specifically how the three tangle together, how wanting someone sometimes means wanting a version of them that no longer exists.

The Dark Humor of Harry Nilsson

The cover of Harry Nilsson’s most critically acclaimed album, 1971’s Nilsson Schmilsson, shows a disheveled Nilsson wearing a robe, one hand in his pocket and the other holding a hash pipe. The album title and cover are perfect illustrations of the humor and apathy that encompassed Nilsson’s musical career. Noel Murray of the A.V. Club wrote of Nilsson: “Nilsson became the musician’s musician, admired for his wild arrangements, his insistence on satisfying his own muse before making his record label happy, and his willingness to mock himself, the culture, and every notion of showbiz propriety.
