Movies, TV Shows, and Productions Affected by the SAG-AFTRA Strike

For the first time in 63 years, the Screen Actors Guild and the Writers Guild were on strike at the same time. Writers hit the picket lines on May 2, and on July 13, Screen Actors Guild president Fran Drescher, formally known as the nanny named Fran, announced actors would be joining the writers officially beginning at midnight on July 14. The writers won a contract in late September, while the actors won a contract this week.

Netflixs Narcos Is Addictive, Smart Entertainment

Wagner Moura as Pablo Escobar in Narcos. Netflix’s new series Narcos is a meaty dramatization of the rise of infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar, as narrated by one of the American DEA agents trying to take him down. The voice-over lends the show the almost dreamy air of a legend or fable, a gather round, children, for the story of the most notorious drug kingpin in living memory, and the show itself acknowledges in its awkward opening moments that this saga is in some ways part of the Colombian tradition of magical realism, that the story of Pablo Escobar is both true and surreal at the same time.

No One Had a Better 2020 Than Blue Ivy, Rumi, and Sir Carter

Rumi and Sir Carter with their chauffeur. Who could’ve possibly had a better 2020 than Beyoncé? Clearly, it’s Blue Ivy, Rumi, and Sir Carter, who on top of being young enough to forget this year even happened, are shown having the time of their lives in Beyoncé’s New Year’s Day video recapping the year. The four-minute IGTV post includes unseen footage of her and Jay-Z’s three children, Blue Ivy, 8, and twins Rumi and Sir, 3.

OMG, Emily (in Paris) Has an Age!

As devoted followers of my Emily in Paris reporting know, I have been on a quest since the day Emily Cooper abandoned Chicago, home to a boring boyfriend and a blah life, and absconded to Paris to be mediocre at her job and make underwhelming romantic and sexual decisions. I honestly still don’t know what Emily’s goals are, exactly, but I do now know what I have sought out from the very beginning, the one question I need answered: How old is Emily?

Our Bodies, Our Junk: Dr. Ruth it Aint

Well, this book took me about a week longer than it should have to read. You really should be able to burn through it in a single day. Like many people my age though, I live my entire life in public spaces, and this is no book for that. First off, the title: Our Bodies, Our Junk. Less-than-savory. Then there’s the shaggy nude couple on the front, a winking reference to the line drawings of coital hippies from The Joy of Sex, shielding their groins and peering out at us shamefully from the cover.

Out of the Bayou with Theo Von

Both professionally and geographically, comedian Theo Von has come a long way from his hometown of Covington, Louisiana, a small town about one hour north of New Orleans. But as a current resident of Los Angeles, Von is still holding on to his Louisiana roots. After touring the country extensively for over a decade and earning spots on Comedy Central, TBS, Last Comic Standing, and CollegeHumor, Von returned to Louisiana last year to film his one hour Netflix special, No Offense, at New Orleans’ Civic Theatre.

Now, he’s pivoting to the music world, set to helm the Country Music Association Awards on November 9.
